I'm out to make a difference. At one point in my life, I'll be laying down on my death bed. Maybe friends will be around me, maybe family, maybe people who hate or love me, or maybe no one at all. I won't be looking at the faces around me, though. Of course, I will recognize the familiar faces and appreciate any form of company, but as I look with my eyes, my mind will back to the past. I suspect I will ask myself questions about what I've done, where I've been, and how I've done it, but most importantly, I will ask myself: what have I done to make a difference? Did I inspire people to achieve their dreams? Was I the friend who held friends on their feet when others tried to knock them down? Was I such a good friend that, even now, they would do the same for me? Did I have the back of a complete stranger in a tough situation? Did I inspire him to do the same to another complete stranger? I guess, in the end, it's a chain reaction. At least, that is what I hope for. Not everyone becomes president, or king, or dictator. Not everyone will stand behind a podium and try convincing a crowd to follow their beliefs. That's one way to make a difference, for better or worse. From personal experience, I have done things similar to the aforementioned. However, I have learned that what was said during these moments behind a microphone had little effect compared to what I've done away from an audience. Simple deeds such as holding doors, a happy greeting, or in some way making somebody smile, has more impact than any speech of mine has. When I wasn't the loud talker, I was the silent army that reinforced my friends, family, and strangers. No fame was required to let them know I held true to my allegiance to them. Then I learned that, from these efforts, they have gone to do the same for friends, family, and strangers. Then those friends, families, and strangers have gone out to inspire others to be invisible armies. As of now, if I died today, I can happily say I died making a difference in many people's lives. Again, for better or worse. On my death bed, I hope to look back into the past, with a smile or frown, and say I have inspired or reinforced the lives of millions, and yet, only a few of them will know my name. Being a true hero is being unsung. The many heroes out there we'll never know. But we know they are indeed out there. On my death bed, I hope to look back in the past... and proudly say I'm one of them.
